Haki, a Māori European teenager who is fighting for the New Zealand colonial forces. He is captured by the Māori resistance. During his captivity, he forms a reluctant friendship with Kopu, a young girl who is believed to be a medium for the Māori god of war. Kopu guides her people into a brutal battle against the colonial British forces, who are vastly outnumbered, in a fight for their land and liberty.
