Freeman family, descendants of African American farmers who settled in rural Canada after the American Civil War. They live on an isolated 40 acre farm, which has become an incredibly valuable commodity in a world where farmland and food are scarce. The family, led by Hailey, a former soldier, and her husband Galen, has become self sufficient and highly skilled in combat, training their children to defend their homestead against constant threats.
