Sofia, a young anthropology student, travels to a sun drenched coastal town in Almería, Spain, with her overbearing, wheelchair bound mother, Rose. Rose suffers from a mysterious illness that intermittently renders her unable to walk, a condition that seems to fluctuate with her mercurial moods. They are there to consult an enigmatic and somewhat unconventional healer, Dr. Gomez, who promises a cure.
